Angels Window is a natural arch and dramatic viewpoint along the Cape Royal corridor on the North Rim. A short, paved path leads to overlooks where you can actually walk atop the arch to a railed perch—thrilling without being technical. It’s one of the few North Rim stops where you can spot the Colorado River from above.
What Makes It Special
- The arch itself is photogenic, but the real kicker is the vantage: look through the “window” to the river, then head up onto the top of the formation for sweeping canyon panoramas.
- Pair it with nearby Cape Royal for a greatest-hits double feature—same trail system, two distinct views.

Getting There & The Walk
Park at the Cape Royal area and follow the paved path—it's a straightforward stroll with a short spur to Angels Window. Railings protect the exposed edges on the arch-top section, but the drop-offs are real, so keep kids close and your attention sharper than your camera.
Season, Rules, and Realities
- The North Rim (and the road to Cape Royal) operates seasonally—typically open mid-May through mid-October and subject to weather or fire closures.
- Vehicle-length restrictions apply on Cape Royal Road (no long RV/trailer combos), and there’s little shade along the path. Bring water; there are no services at the overlook itself.
Photography Tips
- A wide-angle lens captures both the arch and the abyss; a longer lens helps pick out the Colorado River.
- Walk the loop in both directions to vary foregrounds—shoot through the arch, then from atop it for a different feel.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer people; weekdays are quieter than weekends.
