Why go

This is the North Rim’s quick-win viewpoint: a short, paved walk to Angels Window—a natural arch eroded into the Supai Group—where you can actually stand above the opening and peer down toward the Colorado River. The payoff-to-effort ratio is sky-high, with sweeping looks to Vishnu Temple and Wotans Throne.

Route and distance

From the Cape Royal parking area at the end of Cape Royal Road, the paved path heads out through open pinyon–juniper woodland. It’s about 0.6 miles round trip to Angels Window itself on asphalt, with interpretive signs along the way. Railings line the exposed sections near the arch, and the elevation change is negligible (around 6 feet). If you continue to the Cape Royal overlook, plan on roughly a mile total for the whole paved walkway and its multiple viewpoints.

What to expect

Expect a straightforward, family-friendly stroll with big scenery almost immediately. The spur across the top of Angels Window narrows and feels exposed—thrilling for some, unnerving for others—so take your time, especially in wind or if surfaces are wet. Views shift as you move from overlook to overlook, making this a fun spot for photographers at sunrise or sunset when canyon colors glow.

You’ll pass through pinyon–juniper habitat with sagebrush and cliffrose; pause at the signs if you like plant ID. Birdlife is common around the rim, and lingering quietly at the overlooks often rewards you with sightings.

Accessibility and logistics

Most of the main paved path is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly; the short spur over the arch may be too narrow or uneven for some mobility devices. There’s no water or meaningful shade, so bring your own and pack sun protection. Pets aren’t allowed here. No permit is required for day hiking.

Vehicle note: Cape Royal Road has sharp turns and narrow sections; RVs or trailers over 22 feet are not allowed.

Best time to hike

The North Rim and Cape Royal Road are typically open mid-May through mid-October, depending on snow. Go early or late in the day for cooler temps, softer light, easier parking, and fewer people. Always check current road and area status before you go.

Should you do it?

Yes—if you want maximum views for minimal effort, this is a top North Rim stop. Combine Angels Window with the nearby Cape Royal overlook for the full experience and multiple angles on the canyon.
