Roosevelt Point Trail

Roosevelt Point Trail is a very short loop on the North Rim, tucked right off Cape Royal Road. It’s more of a scenic stroll than a hike—about 0.2 miles total—with minimal elevation change and a mellow path through quiet woods to a broad canyon overlook.

At the point, benches make it easy to linger and soak up the sweeping eastern views, including the Painted Desert and distinctive formations like Tritle Peak, Colter Butte, and Swilling Butte. It’s a peaceful stop that usually sees fewer people than some of the better-known North Rim viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll pass a commemorative plaque honoring Theodore Roosevelt’s outsized role in protecting the canyon, adding a nice interpretive touch to the stop.

The trail surface is natural dirt and can be a bit overgrown in spots. It’s not wheelchair accessible, and pets aren’t allowed. Expect a quick in-and-out—worth it for the view and the vibe, but not a destination if you’re chasing miles or challenge. Treat it as a rewarding pullout while you’re exploring Cape Royal Road.

Geologically, you’re standing atop the North Rim’s sedimentary layers (notably Kaibab Limestone), at the top of a narrow ridge that runs east for miles across mesas and buttes—exactly the big, layered story the Grand Canyon is famous for.

Best time to hike: The North Rim typically operates mid‑May through mid‑October, with snow closures outside that window. Late spring through early fall brings cool temperatures and clear views. For the 2025 season, the North Rim (including this trail) is closed due to wildfire impacts—check National Park Service updates before you go.

Quick take: Short, easy, and underrated—stop for the benches-and-vista combo, then pair it with other overlooks along Cape Royal Road for a great half-day of North Rim scenery.
