Overview
Castle Cove Lookout is a short, worthwhile pull‑off on the Great Ocean Road that opens up to huge ocean vistas, wind‑sculpted dunes, and the beach far below. It’s inside Great Otway National Park and doubles as a pinch point on the Great Ocean Walk, so you’ll see day‑trippers and long‑distance hikers mingling on the deck.

From the platform you get sweeping views of the Southern Ocean, dramatic sedimentary cliffs, and long arcs of sand. The geology here is a highlight: Miocene limestone overlain by calcarenite and ferricrete, with giant calcified dunes carved into fantastical shapes. Just beyond here, the coast passes Dinosaur Cove, a celebrated site for polar‑age dinosaur fossils.
Wildlife
Coastal birdlife is a given, and winter–spring brings a decent chance of spotting whales offshore. Binoculars make this stop a lot more rewarding.
Getting There
It’s a signed roadside pull‑off on the Great Ocean Road near Glenaire, roughly 30 km west of Apollo Bay. Public transport works in a pinch: take a V/Line bus to the Glenaire stop, then walk about 1.5 km along the road to the lookout.

Expect a small, free car park and a very short, flat stroll to the viewing deck. There are no toilets, water, bins, tables, or BBQs. A well‑used path nearby drops to the beach, and the Great Ocean Walk crosses at this point—handy if you want to sample a section.
