Sheoak Falls via Castle Rock

Overview

This is a scenic coastal-forest day hike near Lorne that links Sheoak Falls, Swallow Cave, and the Castle Rock lookout in one satisfying loop. Expect about 9.7 km total (roughly 6.0 miles) and plan on 3–3.5 hours moving time. If you only want a sampler, the short option to the falls and Swallow Cave is ~2.5 km return; adding Castle Rock makes it a fuller, **better** day out.

Why go

You get a bit of everything: a photogenic waterfall tumbling into a tree-lined amphitheater, a sandstone cave where seasonal Tree Martins nest, and a headland lookout with big ocean-and-gorge views. It’s popular for good reason—short, steep streams drop straight off the Otways here, so the payoff comes quickly.

Route notes

Most hikers start at Sheoak Picnic Area (toilets, picnic tables) for the longer loop, or at the smaller Sheoak Falls Carpark off the Great Ocean Road for the quick version (no toilets). From the carpark it’s about 600 m to the base of Sheoak Falls on a stepped, well-signed path. A spur continues about 500 m upstream to Swallow Cave, but it requires a short creek crossing that can be unsafe or impassable after heavy rain or in winter. From the main track, a junction points inland toward Castle Rock; that add-on is roughly 2.5 km each way from the Swallow Cave area, with extra climbing and bigger coastal vistas. The full loop from the picnic area (including Castle Rock, Sheoak Falls, and Swallow Cave) is about 9.7 km with ~401 m of gain.

Best time to hike

This route shines after recent rain when the falls and cascades are pumping; in very dry spells the waterfall can shrink to a trickle. Go early or late for softer light at the falls and fewer people on the steps. Coastal weather turns quickly—carry a light wind/rain layer year-round.

What you’ll see

Sheoak Falls drops around 15 m into a sheltered pool. Swallow Cave is a broad sandstone recess with lovely cascades nearby; in spring through autumn, Tree Martins build mud nests here—watch quietly from the formed track. Castle Rock rewards the extra effort with views of the shoreline, the Cumberland estuary and gorge, and the open Bass Strait.

Safety and logistics

Stairs and rocks are slick when wet; wear shoes with grip. Avoid the creek crossing to Swallow Cave during or after heavy rain—these short, steep catchments are prone to flash flooding. The Sheoak Falls Carpark is small and has no facilities; check for any track changes or closures before you go.
