Overview

Tucked just behind Lorne in Great Otway National Park, Phantom Falls drops about 15 m into a shady amphitheatre surrounded by eucalypts and fern gullies. It’s a classic Great Ocean Road waterfall: lush, cool, and at its best after rain.

How to Hike It

Allenvale Road car park (the quick route): ~3.5–3.6 km return, about 1.5 hours. The track crosses signed private orchard land, follows the St George River, then climbs steadily before a railing‑assisted stair descent to the base.
Sheoak Picnic Area “canyon” circuit (the longer option): ~8.5 km round trip, roughly 2.5–3 hours. More varied scenery, a mini‑canyon section, and optional detours to Won Wondah Falls and Henderson Falls; expect ~1.9 km of road walking to close the loop.

What You’ll See

Expect towering eucalypts, ferny gullies, glimpses into the St George River gorge, birdlife, and the occasional koala. The plunge pool and sheer rock walls make it an easy place to linger. Wildflowers dot the track in season.

Facilities & Logistics

Parking at Allenvale Road (small, unsealed) and at Sheoak Picnic Area (larger, with picnic tables and the nearest toilets). There are no toilets at Allenvale.
No taps or shops at either trailhead—bring water and snacks. Mobile reception is patchy; download an offline map.
Dogs are not permitted on these trails. Stay within the marked corridor through the private orchard.

Safety Notes

Tracks can be uneven and slippery after rain, and the final approach to the falls is steep with stairs. The pool may look inviting, but currents and hidden rocks can be hazardous—treat it as a look‑but‑don’t‑swim spot unless conditions are clearly safe. Snakes can be active in warmer weather. Check Parks Victoria for any track or park alerts before you go.

A Bit of Geology

The Otways are built from layered sandstones, siltstones and mudstones. Streams cut down through softer beds, leaving harder layers to form drops—Phantom Falls is one of those steps in the landscape.

Best Time to Visit

The reserve is open 24 hours, but daylight is best. Go after rain for the most dramatic flow. On weekends and holidays, start early to beat the small Allenvale car park rush. Pro tip: some guides typo the trailhead as “Allendale”—you want Allenvale Road.
