Little Aire Falls

Overview

Little Aire Falls is a graceful cascade on Young Creek, tucked in cool‑temperate rainforest and often paired with nearby Triplet Falls. The payoff is a beautifully framed view from a dedicated platform—more tranquil than showy—and the journey through towering myrtle beech and tree ferns is half the reward.

The Walk

Expect roughly 5 km return to the Little Aire Falls viewing platform, taking most hikers 2–2.5 hours. If you tack it onto the Triplet Falls loop, plan on about 6.4 km total and 2.5–3 hours. The track rolls—think repeated ups and downs with plenty of steps—so it feels more strenuous than the distance suggests, and sections can be muddy after rain. The walk starts from the car park at the end of Phillips/Philips Track near Beech Forest.

What You’ll See

From the platform, the falls spill through dense green, with Young Creek sliding across a rock channel before dropping away. You won’t get to the base here, but the elevated, set‑back view actually frames the scene nicely for photos.

Wildlife & Trail Conditions

This pocket of the Otways is classic fern‑gully country. You may hear or spot Superb Lyrebirds and could encounter swamp wallabies. After wet weather, expect leeches and slippery patches—proper footwear earns its keep.

Logistics

• Access is via an unsealed road that’s generally fine for 2WD in normal conditions.
• Facilities at the car park include toilets and picnic tables.
• The car park is large with spillover space, but reception is limited on the track (there’s often only a sliver of signal at the viewing platform). Bring what you need and allow ample time.

Best Time to Visit

For flow, winter to early spring (June–September) is the sweet spot. Start earlier in the day for a quieter track, and pair it with Triplet Falls if you’ve got the legs—most visitors do.
