Look Rock Campground

Overview

Tucked along Foothills Parkway on the quieter side of the park, Look Rock Campground is a wooded, high-country basecamp with a mellow vibe and just enough conveniences. Expect 68 shaded sites with a classic national park feel rather than resort amenities.

Campsites & Amenities

Every site has a picnic table, tent pad, and fire ring. There are flush toilets and potable water, plus an RV dump station. Ten sites include electric hookups—handy if you want a bit of comfort on longer stays. There are no showers. Quiet hours run 10 pm–6 am; generator hours are 8 am–8 pm.

Location & Nearby Highlights

You’re a short hop from the Look Rock Observation Tower for sweeping views, and Foothills Parkway West strings together a bunch of scenic pull-offs. If you’re into drives as much as hikes, this area shines. Fishing and boating spots (like Chilhowee, Calderwood, and Cheoah Lakes) are a drive away, and the infamous Tail of the Dragon is nearby if you like curvy roads.

Rules and Practicalities

Reservations are required, and cell service can be spotty—book before you go. The park requires a parking tag for vehicles parked more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park except when your vehicle is at your reserved campsite. Fires belong in rings only; bring heat-treated firewood or collect dead and downed wood as allowed. This is bear country: store all food and scented items in a hard-sided vehicle or RV when not in use.

Pets

Pets are welcome in camp on a leash (6 ft max). In this park, pets are only allowed on roads and two designated trails; they’re not permitted on other park trails.

Wildlife

Black bears roam these woods, and birding can be rewarding around the ridgelines. Keep a clean camp and give all wildlife plenty of space.

Getting There (Important)

Use US-321 to reach Foothills Parkway West. If you’re towing, avoid GPS routes that try to send you via Montavale Rd, Happy Valley Rd, or Flats Rd—steep, narrow, and not worth the stress. Some sites are near the parkway; expect occasional motorcycle/traffic noise.

Best Time to Visit

Midweek stays are your friend if you want extra elbow room—weekends book up fast. Shoulder seasons bring cooler temps at this higher elevation and great visibility from the tower. For photos, plan around golden hour at the nearby overlooks rather than mid-day glare.
