Newfound Gap Overlook is a roadside mountain pass at 5,046 feet on US 441, where the road crosses from Tennessee into North Carolina. It’s the park’s lowest drivable gap, but the air is cooler here than in the lowlands, and rain below can mean snow at the pass. Stop for the broad ridge views, the state-line marker and the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial. Parking can fill, especially when the trails are busy, so come earlier if finding a spot matters.

The memorial climbs the hillside in two stone terraces linked by steps, with views on both sides of the gap. Henry Vincent Hubbard designed it, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews built it between 1938 and 1940. President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke here at the park’s September 1940 dedication. The original plan included an upper lookout that was never built, so take a moment to look from both terraces.

The Appalachian Trail runs right through Newfound Gap, so this road stop doubles as a trailhead. The round trip to Charlies Bunion is about eight miles. If you’re here for a quick view, stick to the overlook and memorial; hikers use the same parking area for longer walks.

The mountain panorama is right by the road, and the memorial’s stone terraces or the state-line marker make a more distinctive foreground than a ridge-only shot. That small bit of context helps a photo read as Newfound Gap rather than another view of the Smokies.
