Parking

There is no lot at the Hatcher junctions. Cooper Road access is at the back of Abrams Creek Campground or from a pullout on Cades Cove Loop Road, 4.3 miles from the loop entrance. Reaching Hatcher from either access adds several trail miles. Vehicles parked in the park longer than 15 minutes need a parking tag.

Safety

This is a remote connector with no direct road access at either end; plan the approach and exit. A parking tag is required for vehicles parked over 15 minutes, and pets are not allowed on this trail.

Hiking Hatcher Mountain Trail

A connector, not a loopHatcher Mountain Trail is a 2.

Hatcher Mountain Trail is a 2.76-mile point-to-point connector in the Abrams Creek and Cades Cove trail network, running from Cooper Road to the Little Bottoms and Abrams Falls junction area. That is one way along the mapped line, not a there-and-back walk; it includes a short shared section at the far end. It works best as part of a longer walk, since reaching either end from road access adds several trail miles. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for Hatcher itself, then plan the approach and your return.

Through the pine woodsThe native-surface trail winds over several ridges through mostly enclosed pine woods.

The native-surface trail winds over several ridges through mostly enclosed pine woods. From Cooper Road it drops overall toward Abrams Falls Trail, with shorter climbs along the way. The route is designated for hikers and horses. The connector alone is not a complete loop, so decide which adjoining trail will get you back before starting.

In the lower half, patches of fringed polygala can bloom in May, and gnarled chestnut oaks stand beside the tread. When the leaves are off, occasional gaps open views toward Thunderhead Mountain and Gregory Bald. Neither end has roadside parking: reach the junctions on Cooper Road or other neighboring trails. The park requires a parking tag for vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes, and pets are not allowed on this trail.
