The white weatherboard church has a metal roof and a tall steeple with a louvered belfry. It’s about 50 by 30 feet, with a simple auditorium inside. From the front corner, step back enough to fit the steeple and the long side of the building together for a photo.

The congregation began on June 6, 1836, with 21 charter members. Its surviving minutes cover 1836 to 1895, recording monthly meetings as well as marriages, baptisms, deaths and disagreements. That makes the church a record of community life, not only a place of worship.

From Oconaluftee to SmokemontThe church was first known as Oconaluftee Baptist Church.

The church was first known as Oconaluftee Baptist Church. The community took the name Smokemont in the early 1900s, after a lumber company established a camp headquarters by the river. Smokemont grew into a lumber town with homes, businesses and a school; the campground now occupies the former town site.

The approach sign dates the building’s reconstruction to 1912. Inside are wooden pews, a pulpit and a wood-burning stove, but regular public visiting hours weren’t found, so don’t count on getting inside. Campground facilities are separate from the church.
