Chasteen Creek Cascade

Overview

If you like mellow creekside hikes with a photogenic payoff, Chasteen Creek Cascade delivers. This beginner‑friendly out-and-back follows Bradley Fork from Smokemont before slipping up Chasteen Creek to a tranquil sandstone slide the park describes as about 15 feet tall. It’s a great leg-stretcher near Cherokee with a high scenery-to-effort ratio.

Route at a Glance

• Start inside Smokemont Campground at the Bradley Fork Trailhead. The path begins as a broad old road along Bradley Fork and is shared with horses.
• Around 1.1 miles, cross a bridge over Chasteen Creek and soon turn right onto Chasteen Creek Trail.
• Backcountry Campsite 50 sits about 0.1 mile up the trail.
• Near 1.7–1.8 miles, take the left spur by the horse hitching post to reach the cascade. Return the way you came. Total is roughly 3.6 miles roundtrip with about 300–340 feet of gain.

What You’ll See

• The cascade: a mossy bedrock slide on sandstone, framed by rhododendron and laurel. In wet spells it roars; in drier weather it’s a quiet sheet of whitewater.
• Along the way: constant creek views, lush hardwood forest, and a rewarding spring wildflower show (think trillium, violets, foamflower, and phacelia). Autumn colors also shine on this low-elevation corridor.

Trail Feel and Conditions

The first miles are smooth and forgiving, perfect for newer hikers or families. Because horses use parts of the route, expect churned, occasionally muddy tread after rain. Yield to riders and step to the downhill side as they pass.

Logistics

• Parking: Use the far end of Smokemont Campground (D-loop area); spaces are limited. In winter, parts of the campground may close, adding about 0.4 mile of walking to reach the trailhead.
• Restrooms: None on the trail or at the cascade. Use Smokemont Campground facilities or Oconaluftee Visitor Center before/after.
• Regulations: Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail, and bicycles aren’t permitted.
• A valid park parking tag is required when leaving a vehicle.

Best Time to Visit

• Flow: Go after recent rain for the most impressive water.
• Seasons: Spring for wildflowers; fall for foliage.
• Crowds: Start early from Smokemont to have the creek and cascade mostly to yourself.
