Trail guide
Newton Bald Trail is an 11-mile out-and-back from Newfound Gap Road near Smokemont to the Thomas Divide junction. It climbs about 3,000 feet through rhododendron and mixed hardwood forest, then returns on the same 5.5-mile corridor. Newton Bald is wooded, so this is a long forest climb rather than a summit-view hike. I’d choose it for the sustained uphill walk, not for a big view at the top. Allow about six to seven hours.
The trail starts with a short, flat stretch along Newfound Gap Road, then turns uphill around a tenth of a mile in. A broad gravel path from the horse loop joins before the route narrows to singletrack. The tread is generally well graded and leaf covered through rhododendron and hardwoods. There’s a stream crossing near mile 1.2 and other small streams that can be rock hops. The climb eases briefly around mile 4.1, passes over the wooded bald near mile 4.7, then levels near Campsite 52 before reaching Thomas Divide at about mile 5.5.
Use the Smokemont parking area near the Baptist Church, across Newfound Gap Road from the trail start, then cross to the road-side trailhead. The route is shared with horses. Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail, and no reliable water refill point is established along the hike, so plan for the full out-and-back before leaving the road.
