Overview
Tom Branch Falls is a graceful, multi-tiered, roughly 60-foot cascade spilling into Deep Creek. You view it from comfortable benches on the trail side of the creek, which makes it one of the park’s simplest, most rewarding waterfall stops. In warm months, expect to see inner-tube floaters drift past the viewpoint.
The Walk
From the Deep Creek parking area by the campground/picnic area, it’s about 0.3 miles on a wide, mostly level former road (Deep Creek Trail). The path is well maintained and shaded; families often push strollers here. The falls are across the creek from the benches, and there are steps down to the water. Surfaces can be damp, and this multi-use corridor may have horse droppings—nothing tricky, just watch your step.
What You’ll See
A pretty, multi-tiered sheet of water stair-steps down lush rock before meeting Deep Creek. You can’t walk right up to the face of the falls, but the straight-on, across-the-creek view is ideal for photos and lingering on a bench.
Make It a 3-Waterfall Outing
This is the classic starting point for the Deep Creek Waterfall Loop. From Tom Branch Falls, continue about 0.6 miles to Indian Creek Falls, and don’t miss Juney Whank Falls from the same parking area. It’s an easy, family-friendly way to see three different cascades in one outing.
Best Times to Visit
- Summer: Busiest, with lots of tubers in the afternoons—go early or late for quieter views.
- Fall and winter: Noticeably more tranquil.
- Late spring: Mountain laurel and rhododendron often bloom along the trail, adding color.
Logistics
Parking at Deep Creek is limited and popular; arrive early on weekends and peak season. Restrooms are available in the Deep Creek area near the campground/picnic area. A parking ticket is required; kiosks are at the picnic area (card only). Some GPS routes try to send you over rough back roads—use the paved Deep Creek Road from Bryson City. Bicycles are permitted on Deep Creek and Indian Creek trails up to where the old roadbeds end (yield to pedestrians). Pets aren’t allowed on Deep Creek Trail; only a couple of park trails permit leashed dogs.
Photography Tips
Morning light is gentle and, in summer, you’ll have fewer tubers drifting into the frame. Compose from the benches for a clean, head-on view. If you step closer to the creek, traction shoes help on damp edges.
