About Stokes Hill Lookout

Why stop

  • Panoramic view spans Wilpena Pound and several surrounding ranges.

Heads up

  • Rough unsealed approach; towing is discouraged.
Stokes Hill Lookout is a drive-up hilltop viewpoint on Willow Springs Station, north of Wilpena Pound. At about 739 metres, it opens to a 360-degree sweep across the Flinders Ranges, including the eastern side of Wilpena Pound and the Bunkers, Loves Mine, Druid and Chance ranges. Come for a big look at the country without turning the stop into a summit hike; the panorama is the reason to make the detour.

Information boards and a bronze relief model at the lookout help you get your bearings. Then look past them: from the summit, the main road runs away through the ranges for kilometres, giving the broad landscape a sense of scale. The station operator recommends sunrise and sunset, when lower light can pick out changing color across the dry hills. For a photo, include some foreground and the road line if it falls within your view; a strip of land in the bottom of the frame helps show how far the ranges stretch.

The turn-off is north of Wilpena Pound on Flinders Ranges Way, and the final climb is on an unsealed station road. From Willow Springs Homestead, the drive is about ten minutes. The lookout has car and coach parking. Regular cars, AWDs and 4WDs are listed as suitable, but towing isn't advised; there are steep, rough patches, so take the climb slowly. Camping isn't permitted at the lookout. This is a good stop if you want the scale of the ranges without a long walk. If you're towing, skip the drive to the summit.
