Wilpena Pound Lookout is a natural viewpoint on the rim of Ikara Wilpena Pound, reached on foot from Rawnsley Park Station. It looks inward across the enclosed basin, with the ring of ranges filling the distance. The viewpoint is reached by a proper uphill walk; choose it for a high view into the Pound and a substantial outing.

The track starts at a car park inside Rawnsley Park Station, follows a creek bed, then climbs the foothills of the main range in Bonney Sandstone. It steepens on the way to Lone Pine Lookout, where the view opens along the escarpment toward Elder Range. Farther up, a fork gives you a choice: one branch reaches Wilpena Pound Lookout after a 600-metre spur, while the other continues about 1.5 kilometres farther to Rawnsley Bluff.

Look into the PoundFrom the lookout, the main payoff is the view across the basin from its high rim.

From the lookout, the main payoff is the view across the basin from its high rim. The rocky foreground and long ridge line make this the place to frame the Pound from above. If you continue to Rawnsley Bluff, the view swings south and east toward Chace Range; a dry-stone survey cairn built by Samuel Parry in 1858 marks that separate endpoint.

Plan the walkTreat the lookout as a half-day walk, not a quick photo stop.

Treat the lookout as a half-day walk, not a quick photo stop. Published route estimates for the lookout return differ, from about two to three hours to four hours; continuing to Rawnsley Bluff is described as an 11.3-kilometre, five-hour outing. Check Rawnsley Park Station’s walking map at reception before setting out, especially if choosing between the lookout spur and the longer bluff route. The station lists marked self-guided walks.
