Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is a hands-on nature center in Gary and the western gateway to Miller Woods. Inside, you’ll find exhibits, a room with live animals from the park, nature crafts and ranger programs; outside, the Nature Play Zone lets kids dig, climb and build with natural materials. It’s an easy way to give the dunes some context, especially for families. The center is a small educational stop, though, not a big museum—pair it with a walk if you want a fuller visit.

The short Douglas Center Loop is 0.9 mile and takes about 30 minutes, with wetlands and ponds close to the center. For the beach and a bigger outing, take the 3.4-mile round trip through Miller Woods; allow about two hours. It’s a moderate walk, and soft sand near the dunes makes the return more work than the distance sounds. Carry water and sun protection for the exposed stretch by the lake.

The longer route starts around wetlands and small ponds, crosses a bridge over the Grand Calumet River, then climbs into tall dunes before reaching Lake Michigan. Along the way, you pass a globally rare black oak savanna, with open-grown oaks, native grasses and wildflowers including lupine. Keep an eye on the small ponds between dunes and watch for beavers, though sightings are never guaranteed.

The center honors Paul H. Douglas, an Illinois senator and conservation advocate who helped establish Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966. Gary Mayor Richard G. Hatcher described the center as a way for people in an industrial region to experience and value the dunes. That local purpose still fits: the center introduces the natural landscape right at the edge of the city.

The center has restrooms, drinking water and an accessible walk to the marsh boardwalk and picnic tables. The full trails aren’t wheelchair accessible. Bring lunch: picnic tables are available, but there’s no café or food counter here. An entrance pass is required for Indiana Dunes National Park; its state park is separate.
