West Entrance Station

Overview

This small fee booth on Park Boulevard is the most-used gateway into the park. You’ll pay your entrance fee or pick up a pass here, then slip straight into classic high‑desert scenery. It’s convenient, but popularity means it’s also the choke point most visitors hit first.

What you’ll find

Immediately beyond the booth there’s a short pull-in with a small parking area, restrooms, and a water bottle–filling station—perfect for topping off before you head deeper into the park. Rangers staff the booth to collect fees and answer quick questions, and they may also check passes as you drive or bike out later. If the booth is unstaffed and roads are open, you can continue into the park; special circumstances like weather may change that.

Crowds and smarter alternatives

Because it’s closest to nearby towns, this is the busiest entrance. Expect queues during busy periods, especially on weekends and holidays. If you’re allergic to lines, consider entering via the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms; it’s often quicker.

Best time to visit

• Early morning or late afternoon sees shorter lines and gentler light.
• Weekdays beat weekends; avoid holiday peaks when possible.
• If you roll up to a long queue, rerouting to the North Entrance can save time.

Need-to-know

• There’s no food, store, or gas at the gate—come prepared.
• Water and restrooms are available just inside the entrance; use them before heading out.
• A park project is planned to construct a larger, more efficient West Entrance station farther inside the boundary to ease backups.
