Quail Springs is a roadside picnic area on Park Boulevard, the first picnic stop after the west entrance. Tables and grills sit beside rounded granite boulders, with Joshua trees and shrubs around the open clearing. It’s an easy place to eat or stretch your legs before driving farther into the park.
Bring your meal and drinking water: there’s no drinking water here, and the restrooms are vault toilets. NPS lists 34 paved parking spaces, nine picnic tables, and seven grills. A paved ramp and sidewalk lead from the parking area to a section with two tables and a raised grill; much of the rest of the grounds is open dirt, with limited shade.
These rounded outcrops are weathered granite, and the big formations are right behind the tables. The picnic area connects with Quail Springs Historic Trail and Ryan Johnnie Connector Trail, with access to Boy Scout Trail. A roadside sign also points visitors toward the rock exhibit.
The parking lot is one of Joshua Tree’s designated stargazing areas. Aim for a clear, darker night: moonlight and cloud cover hide fainter stars. Bring a red-tinted light and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust; a new moon gives the Milky Way better contrast.
