Indian Cove Campground

Indian Cove is a developed campground on the north side of the Wonderland of Rocks, at about 3,200 feet. Its 101 sites, including 13 group sites, sit on flat, sandy ground beneath tall, steep boulders. Choose it for climbing or a night among the rocks: routes are close by, and there is plenty to explore around camp. This is a simple desert campground, not a full-service RV park.

The Indian Cove Nature Trail starts at the campground’s west end and loops for about half a mile. It introduces the area’s plants and animals, along with its seasonal Indigenous use. Even if you do not climb, it gives you an easy walk between time at camp.

The boulders began as volcanic rock millions of years ago, then were exposed and shaped by wind and water. They rise in steep, rounded forms from sandy, low desert terrain, which is what makes this campground feel so different from an ordinary overnight stop.

Each site has a picnic table and designated fire ring, and vault toilets are spread through the loops. There is no water in the campground, hookups, showers, dump station or camp store. Fill jugs near the entrance and fee station or at the ranger station about two miles north. Cell service is unreliable. Sites vary in size and parking, so check the exact site before booking, especially with a larger rig. Reservations are required year-round.

Reach Indian Cove Road from Highway 62; the entrance is about 13 miles east of Joshua Tree village and 10 miles west of Twentynine Palms. There is no vehicle link from the campground into the main park-road network. To continue along Park Boulevard, drive back out to Highway 62 and enter the main park separately.

Mature Mojave yuccas and shrubs grow among the rocks, with spring blooms bright against the pale stone. Desert tortoises may emerge from burrows in spring and early fall, and birders look for LeConte’s thrasher here.
