Overview

Bowali is the park’s main orientation hub near Jabiru, designed to echo an Aboriginal rock shelter and named for nearby Bowali Creek. It’s the smartest first stop in the region: a cool, thoughtful space to get your bearings before you chase waterfalls, wetlands and rock art.

What you’ll find

Inside you’ll walk through engaging exhibits that unpack Kakadu’s geology, ecosystems and rich Aboriginal heritage. Expect multimedia displays, a theatre and a small library, plus staff who can steer you to what’s open now, the best drives, and any ranger talks or guided activities.

Marrawuddi Gallery

Just behind the centre, Marrawuddi Gallery showcases local Indigenous art and craft, along with books and gifts. It’s a quality browse and a meaningful place to support artists from the region.

Practicalities

Hours are generally 8am–5pm daily. You’ll find clean restrooms, free filtered drinking water for bottle refills, charging stations, picnic tables and plenty of parking. The café has closed (no food or coffee currently). There’s no fuel or campground here, and no formal trailheads start at the centre. Staff can help with park passes and planning; tour bookings are handled in Jabiru township.

Wildlife

You won’t spot much wildlife inside, but the exhibits will sharpen your ID skills for when you reach wetlands and stone country. Around the grounds you may catch common local birdlife.

Is it worth it?

Yes—if you value context, current conditions and a game plan, Bowali is essential. It’s less about thrills and more about making the rest of your trip better.

Best time to visit

Come right at opening (8–10am) for cooler temps, easy parking and unhurried exhibits, or after 3pm when crowds taper. Allow 60–120 minutes if you want to see both the displays and the gallery.
