Overview

A Kakadu original, the Gagudju Crocodile Hotel is literally shaped like a crocodile—head, tail, the lot—with the entrance in the “mouth.” It’s the landmark stay in Jabiru and a practical base for exploring the park’s big hitters.

Location: In central Jabiru, a short drive to Bowali Visitor Centre and well placed for day trips to Ubirr, Nourlangie, and Yellow Water Billabong.

Culture and story

The hotel is owned by Indigenous Gaagudju clans and was Kakadu’s first major tourism development. The crocodile (Ginga) is a totem and guardian in Gagudju culture, and the building celebrates that connection. You’ll see Indigenous artworks and artifacts in public spaces, plus an on‑site gallery.

The Manjmukmuk Restaurant & Bar serves buffet breakfast and dinner alongside à la carte options, with a separate bar on site. Expect the convenience of on‑site meals in a very remote town—but check hours outside peak season.

This place is memorable and fun—great “we stayed in the croc” bragging rights. Public areas and the pool courtyard are inviting, but multiple reports note rooms and bathrooms showing their age. Service can be excellent, but consistency varies. Parking is straightforward.

Wildlife and nearby

You won’t spot crocs in the courtyard, but this is a prime base for tours and drives where you will: Yellow Water cruises for crocodiles and birdlife, plus escarpment art sites and floodplains. It’s “part bush retreat, part cultural hub” at the center of it all.

Best time to visit

Book for the dry season (May–October) when roads, tours, and the restaurant run more reliably and evenings by the pool are pleasant. For photos of the quirky exterior, daylight makes the croc outline easiest to appreciate; dinner time is popular, so arrive early if you’re aiming for the buffet.
