About Cahills Crossing

Cahills Crossing is the low concrete causeway over the East Alligator River at the end of Oenpelli Road. It’s the single road link to Arnhem Land and one of the most dependable places in the Top End to see wild saltwater crocodiles doing what they do best.

When the tide surges in, fish funnel over the causeway and crocodiles line up to feed. On good days you can see many large crocs in one frame, from the safety of purpose-built viewing platforms beside the crossing. That combination of drama and safe vantage points is what makes this spot famous.

Best time to visit

The late dry season (July–November) offers the most reliable crocodile action, with September–October often peaking. For the show, aim for the hour or two around high tide; arrive a bit early to grab a good spot on the platform. Expect more people during popular tides and in the heart of the dry season.

Logistics and facilities

There are viewing platforms, parking areas, bathrooms and a few picnic tables near the crossing. You won’t find food, fuel or a store here, so come prepared. If you’re heading beyond the crossing into Arnhem Land, you’ll need a Northern Land Council permit. In the dry season, keep an ear out for ranger talks and check interpretive signs on site.
