Why go
This dry-season-only track threads through sculpted sandstone outliers before sidling the East Alligator River—prime “stone country + big river” scenery without the Ubirr crowds. It’s a more adventurous feel than the short lookouts, yet still manageable in half a day if you start early.
Route and distance
The Sandstone and River section is roughly 6.5 km (about 4.0 miles) return, starting from the Bardedjilidji car park on the road to Ubirr. Most hikers pair it with the shorter 2.5 km Bardedjilidji loop for a fuller sampler of the area. Expect a mix of firm sand, rock shelves and short uneven steps. Elevation is minor, but footing and heat make it feel tougher than the numbers suggest.
What you'll see
You’ll wind between weathered sandstone outliers—narrow passages, overhangs, and pockets of shade—then break out to riverbank views across to Arnhem Land. Watch for birdlife: white-bellied sea-eagles (marrawuddi) cruising the river, peregrine falcons on the cliffs, and small, flitting lavender-flanked wrens in thicker vegetation. Crocodiles inhabit the river—great to spot from a safe distance. Do not approach the water at any time.
Best time to hike
Walk this in the dry season when access is open and conditions are safer and cooler. Early morning brings softer light on the sandstone, more bird activity, and less heat. Wet-season flooding often closes the river sections—always check the current access report or ask at Bowali Visitor Centre before setting out.
Know before you go
This is a marked bushwalk but can feel remote and exposed. Carry plenty of water and sun protection; shade is limited. The track can be less defined or overgrown after closures, so a map/GPS helps. Hike with a partner if you can. There are no toilets or drinking water on the trail; basic parking only at the Bardedjilidji car park. A park pass is required for all visitors.
Who will love it (and who won’t)
If you want classic Kakadu rock-and-river variety without a huge day, this is a sweet spot—scenic, quieter, and not overly long. If you prefer easy boardwalks or can’t manage uneven ground and heat, stick to the shorter Bardedjilidji loop or time your visit for the coolest hours.
