Overview

Jabiru Airport is a small, no-fuss airstrip inside the park that exists for one big reason: to get you into the sky over Kakadu. With a single east–west runway and parking for light aircraft, it’s the practical hub for scenic flights and charters that show you country you simply can’t reach (or appreciate) from the ground.

Why go

From here, short flights (think 30–60 minutes) lift you over sandstone escarpments, vast floodplains and billabongs, and—when they’re running—seasonal waterfalls. It’s the best bang-for-time way to grasp the scale of the wetlands and the ancient Arnhem Land Plateau.

On-the-ground experience

Expect a straightforward regional airfield: basic facilities, tour counters, and a small souvenir offering at times. Helicopter and fixed‑wing operators base here, so check in is easy; just don’t expect a full-service terminal or many food options.

Best time to visit

• Dry season (May–September): most reliable flying weather and high demand—book ahead.
• Wet season (November–April): waterfalls are at their best, but storm cells can delay or cancel flights—build in flexibility.
• For photography, softer light early or late in the day tends to flatter the landscape, and heat haze is less of an issue outside the midday window.

• Reserve your scenic flight well in advance during the May–September peak.
• In the wet season, keep your schedule loose in case of weather delays.
• Bring water, sun protection and a camera—windows mean you’ll want lens wipes too.
