This is a super-short, sealed out-and-back to a dramatic lookout over the Murchison River Gorge. It’s about 0.2 km return (roughly 0.12 miles total) on a flat, even path. Graded Class 1, it’s suitable for prams and unassisted wheelchair users. If you’re chasing a “hike,” this isn’t it—it’s a viewpoint stop—but the payoff-to-effort ratio is excellent.
From the lookout, the gorge opens up in layered ancient sandstone carved by the Murchison River. Interpretive panels help you decode the rock patterns, local ecology, and restoration stories. See if you can pick out the rock profile that gives the site its name. Keep an eye on the cliffs—Peregrine Falcons sometimes work these walls. In wildflower season (July–October), the surrounds light up, with some species unique to the park.
You’ll find a loop carpark, accessible bays, an all-abilities lookout platform, toilets, shaded picnic shelters, and BBQs. Access is via a sealed road about 36 km from Kalbarri and is fine for all vehicles and caravans. This is a day-use site only. National park entry fees apply.
Wildflowers peak from July to October. From December through April, heat can be intense—go early or late and keep your visit short. Shade is limited at the lookout itself, so plan breaks at the shelter.
Carry your own drinking water—there’s none on site. Wear sun protection and supervise kids near cliff edges. Stay on the formed path and behind barriers; undercut edges and loose rock exist in the gorge country. No pets (the park uses 1080 baiting). If you want more walking or river access, pair this with nearby Ross Graham. For bigger views, add the Skywalk, Z Bend, or the Loop/Nature’s Window to your day.
Sealed Ajana–Kalbarri Road access to the Hawks Head day-use area; loop carpark with accessible bays, suitable for all vehicles and caravans.
Very hot from December to April; no potable water on site; exposed lookout with undercut cliff edges and loose rock—stay on the formed path and supervise children. No pets due to 1080 baiting.
