Challenging

A rugged out-and-back into the Murchison River gorge, the Four Ways Trail delivers big scenery for a relatively short effort. It’s a 6 km return (about 3.7 miles) route with a steep descent to the river and an honest climb back. Expect rocky and sandy sections underfoot, uneven natural steps, and polished rock slabs near the water. Spring wildflowers add color along the track, and the striped Tumblagooda Sandstone walls make the gorge feel other‑worldly.
Start from the Z Bend car park at the end of Z Bend Access Road. Follow the signed track toward the river, descending through rocky ledges and sandy pads to the “Four Ways” junction where side gorges meet the main Murchison. This is your turnaround point—take a break, soak in the views, and, if conditions allow, enjoy a quick dip before retracing your steps back up to the car park. Surfaces alternate between sand, rock slabs, and creek‑bed boulders; watch for slick, sand‑dusted rock on the way down and up.
Officially graded Class 4, this is a moderately hard walk with a strenuous return climb in warm weather. Most hikers take about 1.5–2 hours for the return, but give yourself extra time to enjoy the river and manage the heat.
Winter through spring (June–October) is prime: cooler mornings, softer light in the gorge, and peak wildflowers in late August–September. Summer heat is severe—start at sunrise if you must go then, and expect flies in the warmer months. River levels rise after rain; avoid venturing into the gorge when heavy rain is forecast upstream.
The Z Bend car park has toilets, picnic shelters, and gas barbecues, but no drinking water—bring your own. Mobile reception is limited. Pets are not permitted in Kalbarri National Park. For prepared and experienced parties only, there’s a much tougher, unmarked loop option linking sections of river and the Z Bend area; it involves route‑finding, scrambling, and potential swims, and should only be attempted in cool, stable conditions and low river levels.
Heat is the main hazard here. Start early, wear sun protection, and carry plenty of water (plan on at least 1 liter per hour per person in hot conditions). Polished rock near the river can be slick; watch your footing. Flash‑flood risk exists after rain. Consider carrying a personal locator beacon in case of emergencies, and check park alerts before you go.
