Z Bend Lookout Trail

Overview

This is the park’s quick-hit viewpoint: a short, moderately easy walk to a barricaded lookout perched about 150 m above the Murchison River’s tight “Z” bends carved into ancient Tumblagooda Sandstone. Expect sweeping gorge views without committing to a full-on scramble. The walk is 1.2 km return (0.8 miles total) from the carpark, with steps and a modest incline.

Trail Notes

The path is well formed and signed, rated Class 3. Stairs do the climbing for you, but they’ll still raise the heart rate on the way back. Most hikers take 30–60 minutes, including plenty of gawking time at the lookout.

Geology and Flora

You’re looking at the Murchison River slicing through deep red, banded Tumblagooda Sandstone—classic Kalbarri. In season (July–October), the surrounding shrubland pops with flowering natives like Flame Grevillea, Bird Beak Hakea, Starflowers, orchids (including the Kalbarri spider orchid), and Pink Poker—an easy bonus for such a short outing.

Best Time to Hike

This is doable year-round, but summer heat is real here. From December to April, start early in the day and carry adequate water. Wildflower season (July–October) is the sweet spot for color and milder temps.

Logistics and Facilities

Access is on sealed roads suitable for 2WD, roughly a 30‑minute drive from Kalbarri. Park entry fees apply. At the trailhead you’ll find toilets, shaded picnic shelters, and BBQs. Wheelchair access is limited to the picnic area; steps block access to the lookout. Note that caravans and trailers aren’t permitted past the entry gate; there’s a small, unshaded area near the gate to unhitch, but it’s easier to leave them in town.

Safety and Who It’s For

Heat is the main hazard—plan for sun, carry plenty of water, and avoid the hottest part of the day. The lookout trail itself is straightforward, but if you choose to continue on separate routes down into the gorge, expect ladders, boulder-hopping, and Class 4 terrain. Pets are not permitted due to ongoing 1080 baiting.

Comparable Options

If you want a tougher challenge after the lookout, the Z Bend River Trail and the longer Four Ways route drop into the gorge with serious scrambling—only for fit, prepared hikers. For another easy, big-view stop nearby, consider pairing this with the Kalbarri Skywalk on the same park road.
