Trail guide
Mushroom Rock Trail is the circuit between Mushroom Rock and Rainbow Valley, with either carpark serving as an access point. The mapped loop measures about 2.4 km (1.5 mi); the park visitor guide lists 3 km, while a 2024 GPS track measures 2.6 km. Allow about an hour for the walk, plus time to explore the shore and read the interpretive panels. From Mushroom Rock Carpark the route descends toward the coast and returns over rough sandstone and rocky steps.
White markers lead down through the valley toward Mushroom Rock, then along the coastal track. Expect uneven, sometimes loose rock and steps. The rock platform reaches the water’s edge, so stay well back from exposed edges, especially when seas are rough.
Interpretive panels explain Tumblagooda Sandstone and the trace fossils preserved in its layers, including worm-tube forms and the rock formations known as Pipe Rock. Mushroom Rock’s rounded profile was shaped by wind and water erosion over many years.
