- Cold pool temperatures for much of the year reduce swim appeal
Kalamina Gorge car park and lookout at the end of Kalamina Road off Banjima Drive; unsealed access, with toilets, picnic area, and an information shelter.
Slippery rock, narrow ledges, and shallow stream crossings; very cold water April–September; unsealed road access can require 4WD at times; no glass or alcohol in gorges; pack out all rubbish; pets not permitted.
Overview
Kalamina is one of Karijini’s gentler gorges: short, scenic, and far quieter than the park’s headline slots. Expect banded red walls, reflective pools, and a tranquil vibe. The full hike to Rock Arch Pool is an out-and-back of about 3.0 km/1.9 miles total.
Route
From the lookout, descend quickly to a shaded permanent pool below a small seasonal waterfall. Turn downstream and follow the creek along terrace-like ledges and stepping stones, weaving past reeds and rock pools. The turnaround is Rock Arch Pool, where the gorge narrows around a natural arch; return the same way.
Difficulty & Who It’s For
Underfoot it’s mostly straightforward but on rock—expect slick surfaces, occasional shallow stream crossings, and some narrow ledges. Most hikers will find it easier than the park’s more technical gorges, though care is needed if the rocks are wet. Families comfortable with rock walking tend to enjoy it.
What You’ll See
Classic Karijini color—the red-orange ironstone bands contrasted with jade-green water and deep blue-purple shadows. Look for paperbarks and lemon‑scented grasses along the creek, and small fish in the pools. A sandy beach section and the diminutive waterfall make pleasant rest spots.
Best Time to Hike
Late autumn through early spring brings warm, clear days and cooler nights. Water in the gorge is very cold from April to September, so plan swims accordingly. Late afternoon light flatters the walls and temperatures, and crowds are typically light here.
Logistics
Trailhead parking is at Kalamina Gorge car park and lookout at the end of Kalamina Road off Banjima Drive. Roads are unsealed and conditions vary; the spur has been signed 4WD-only at times—check current advisories. Facilities at the trailhead include toilets, a picnic area, and an information shelter (drinking water is noted here, but always carry your own). Standard park entry fees apply.
Safety & Etiquette
Rocks can be slippery; wear grippy footwear and move carefully on ledges. Do not take glass or alcohol into the gorge. Pack out all rubbish. Avoid contaminating pools with soap, detergents, or sunscreen. Pets are not permitted anywhere in the park. Respect the Traditional Owners and the cultural significance of waterways by keeping noise low and never jumping from ledges.
Geology Snapshot
These gorges slice through 2.5‑billion‑year‑old iron-rich sediments of the Hamersley Group. The striking banded iron formations formed in ancient seas; later drops in sea level let rivers rapidly incise the landscape, carving today’s sheer-walled canyons.
