Aialik Glacier

Aialik Glacier is a tidewater glacier at the head of Aialik Bay, where a broad, crevassed face meets the water beneath steep mountain slopes. It flows from the Harding Icefield, about four miles inland. This is a water destination, not a road or trail stop. Boat trips from Seward may visit Aialik or Holgate depending on conditions, so confirm the itinerary if Aialik itself is the reason you are going.

From the water, the glacier fills the end of the bay, with dark cliffs and snow-covered peaks framing the ice. The face can look intensely blue, and chunks of ice float in front of it. Calving is possible, but it is not a scheduled show; harbor seals may also be in the area. For photos, leave some of the surrounding slopes or water in the frame. That gives the huge ice face a sense of scale.

Aialik Bay stretches about 22 miles from the glacier toward the Gulf of Alaska. Retreat of Aialik, Pedersen and Holgate glaciers carved the long inlet. The glacier itself runs about four miles from the Harding Icefield to the bay, so the face you see from a boat is only the seaward end of a much longer stream of ice.

Aialik comes from Sugpiaq and means “surprising place.” In 1908 and 1909, geologists Grant and Higgins named the glacier and cape after Aialik Bay. The older bay name was recorded during the Russian period and has Indigenous roots, though that historical account does not give a precise translation for the earlier form.

Photographs from 1990 and 2016 found the face in a similar position across those two dates, while the surface thinned and the sides retreated. It is a useful reminder that a glacier can look fixed from the water while still changing across its broader ice body.

Aialik Bay is exposed to the Gulf of Alaska, with few protected coves, strong wind and rain, surf landings, and summer storm swells. Inexperienced paddlers should choose a guided trip. Park kayak guidance says to stay at least half a mile from a tidewater glacier terminus and to land or camp at least two miles away; calving can send waves onto nearby beaches. Plan food and restrooms around your boat trip, not at the glacier itself.
