Holgate Glacier

Holgate Glacier is a tidewater glacier at the head of Holgate Arm, where ice from the Harding Icefield reaches Aialik Bay. Its broad blue-white front meets the sea below steep rocky slopes; floating ice may scatter the water in front. It is one of the bay’s signature sights, but this is an outing on the water, not a roadside stop.

Visitors reach the glacier by boat from Seward or by kayak. Some cruise itineraries include Holgate, while others choose Aialik Glacier depending on conditions, so a Holgate stop is not guaranteed. For a longer stay, the reservable Holgate Public Use Cabin in the arm has glacier views. The marine trip can be cold, wet and windy; bring warm, wind-resistant layers.

Calving may send a crack or boom across the arm, but it may not happen during your visit. Water near the face is not a simple landing zone: ocean swell, wind off the glacier, calving waves and boat wakes can stack up. Small beaches close to the glacier can be washed over by glacier-generated waves, which have swept kayakers off them. Don’t treat those beaches as casual stops.

In 1909, U.S. Geological Survey geologist U.S. Grant named the glacier for Dr. Thomas F. Holgate, then dean of Northwestern University’s College of Liberal Arts. A paired photograph from 1909 and 2019 records the longer change: Holgate has retreated and thinned since the early twentieth century. The face moves, so today’s ice edge will not match the historic frame.

Holgate flows from the Harding Icefield into Aialik Bay, in a coastal landscape carved by repeated glacial advances and retreats. The last Ice Age began about 25,000 years ago; ice cut cirques into the peaks and fjords into the coast. The steep walls around Holgate Arm show the scale of that carving.

From a boat or kayak, frame the glacier between its dark rock shoulders and leave floating ice across the foreground. That wide view shows how the ice front meets the fjord and gives the scene a sense of scale. Calving is unpredictable, so the quiet face and floes make a strong picture on their own.
