Before you go

A boat-access cove

Tooth Cove is the middle of three similar small coves on Aialik Bay, and the only one officially named Tooth Cove. It’s a remote landing beach with limited backcountry camping, so it makes sense if you’re exploring the bay by kayak or boat; it isn’t a roadside stop. Inexperienced paddlers should go with a guide. Paddling from Seward isn’t recommended because the route has long exposed stretches and hazardous water around Aialik Cape.

Camping space is limited, and these beaches have no food lockers or hanging cables, so campers need bear-resistant food canisters. Seasonal nesting-bird closures can affect Tooth Cove; check current park conditions before setting out. Weather can shift quickly. Look at the driftwood, beach slope, cobble size and vegetation when judging how exposed a landing may be overnight.

Clear shallows in the backThe water at the back of the cove is generally clear enough to see intertidal and subtidal life.

The water at the back of the cove is generally clear enough to see intertidal and subtidal life. For a photo from the water, keep the steep shoreline and offshore rocks in the frame, with the mountains behind them; that shows the cove’s shape better than a tight shot of the beach.
