Verdant Cove is a backcountry landing on the west shore of Aialik Bay, near the north end of Dora Passage. It’s a stop for paddlers moving between Aialik Bay and Northwestern Fiord, not a road-side detour. I’d make the landing if you’re already traveling this stretch: the cove marks the beginning or end of a long shoreline run without good campsites.

Aim for the south beachThe southeast beach, especially its southern end, is the more protected landing.

The southeast beach, especially its southern end, is the more protected landing. The north beach behind Verdant Island takes more wave energy and is much harder to land on. Check the landing and relaunch conditions before committing to the beach. Both beaches are regular black oystercatcher nesting spots, so seasonal closures may apply; check current park conditions before you head in.

Look behind the bermBehind the gravel storm berm stands a ghost forest of dead spruce.

Behind the gravel storm berm stands a ghost forest of dead spruce. It records the 1964 earthquake: the ground sank, seawater reached the trees, and they died. Leave the standing trunks where they are; they’re part of the story, not firewood. For a photo, frame the gravel beach with the dead spruce behind it so the shoreline and ghost forest read together.

Plan around the backcountryA food-storage locker sits near the east end of the south beach.

A food-storage locker sits near the east end of the south beach. This is a remote camping stop with no road access. Two private parcels sit in the cove, so check park guidance on food storage, waste, private inholdings, and seasonal shorebird closures before planning a landing.
