Park at the Exit Glacier Visitor/Nature Center at the end of Exit Glacier Road; the lot is busy in summer, so arrive early or be patient.
Stay behind barriers near the glacier; ice and rockfall are real hazards. Rocks can be slick near meltwater. Weather changes rapidly. Wildlife is present—carry bear spray and make noise. In winter the road typically closes to vehicles; over‑snow travel is required.
This short, front-country walk starts at the Exit Glacier Visitor/Nature Center and follows a well‑maintained path toward the toe of Exit Glacier. Expect scoured bedrock, rushing meltwater, and that unmistakable chill as katabatic air rolls off the ice. Interpretive signs mark where the glacier stood in past decades, a vivid, walkable timeline of its retreat.
Plan on roughly 2.0 miles total out and back (about 1.0 mile one way) with minimal elevation and a packed gravel/dirt surface. The first section is barrier‑free and suitable for many mobility levels; the final approach to the viewpoint can be uneven. If you want to extend the outing, the same hub offers an accessible 1‑mile loop and a signed spur to the Glacier Overlook for a higher vantage.
Best from late May through September, this is an easy, rewarding way to get close to active glacier ice without a big climb. It’s popular—arrive early for parking and a quieter feel. Weather shifts fast; bring layers and rain gear, and respect all barriers near the ice and streams.
