Boyden Cavern

Boyden Cavern is a guided marble-cave tour beneath the Kings Gates on Highway 180. The cavern is in Sequoia National Forest, outside Kings Canyon National Park, though you drive through the park to reach it. The round trip takes about 45–60 minutes and goes roughly 750 feet into the cave before returning along the same route. It’s a good planned stop for a close look at cave formations or a cool break from the drive; this is a compact tour, not a long cave expedition.

The path from the parking and check-in area to the entrance takes about five minutes and is short but very steep, with handrails. Inside, expect uneven, sometimes slick ground, low ceilings, narrow passages and places where you’ll need to duck or turn sideways. The cavern stays around 55°F. It isn’t wheelchair accessible, and the short route still asks for steady footing and enough mobility to handle the steep approach. Photos are allowed on standard tours, but flash and continuous lighting aren’t.

The route passes stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, pendants and shields at close range. These formations have taken more than 100,000 years to grow. The cavern lies in the Boyden Cave Roof Pendant, a thick, steeply layered marble body in the Kings Terrane. Blue-gray marble is visible near the parking area and in the South Fork Kings River channel, so the geology continues outside the cave.

The arrival area is about 19 miles east of Grant Grove on Highway 180. Save your directions before leaving Grant Grove; phone service drops out farther down the road. Highway access and tours are seasonal, with dates depending on road and weather conditions, so check current status and tour availability before driving. Arrive 15–30 minutes before your tour. Thunder pauses tours because of lightning risk on the trail and at the entrance.

The small gift shop sells bottled water, soda, packaged snacks, souvenirs and geodes you can crack on site; it doesn’t serve hot meals. Cedar Grove and Grant Grove are the closest places for a cooked meal. There are pit toilets and a picnic area with tables beside the river, but no running or potable water. A separate tour ticket, park admission and a site parking fee apply.
