Grizzly Falls

Grizzly Falls is a roughly 80-foot waterfall reached by a short walk from its picnic area in Sequoia National Forest, just outside Kings Canyon National Park on the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. It makes an easy break on the drive to Cedar Grove rather than a hike you need to build the day around. The picnic area is about 4.6 miles from Cedar Grove Visitor Center.

The falls swell in early spring. Visitors describe strong, misty flow during spring snowmelt and much less water in a dry summer, so the waterfall is most dramatic when runoff is high. In a dry late summer, expect a smaller cascade; it can still be a pleasant picnic stop.

The approach from the picnic area is short, and you can see the waterfall without making a long walk. Rocks close to the water are uneven and can be slippery, especially when the spray is strong. Take care if you step down toward the base; there is no need to scramble to the water's edge to enjoy the falls.

Picnic tables and a vault toilet are beside the approach. There is no drinking water or grill, so bring water and food with you. Parking is limited and can fill, so allow a little flexibility if you are stopping at a busy time.

The narrow stream drops down a steep granite face between trees and boulders. For a photo that shows the height, include the full fall and some of the rock around its base instead of cropping tightly to the water. The view changes with the season as the flow rises and falls.
