Zumwalt Meadow

Overview

Zumwalt Meadow is the classic valley-floor stroll in the Cedar Grove area: a flat, photogenic meadow tucked beside the South Fork of the Kings River and framed by sheer granite cliffs. It’s popular for good reason—low effort, high reward.

What You’ll See

Expect close-up river scenes, lush meadow grasses, and soaring canyon walls. The talus slopes add a rugged feel, and the open meadow gives big sky views that are rare on short hikes.

Trail at a Glance

• Distance/elevation: about 1.5–1.6 miles round-trip with roughly 150–160 feet of gain.
• Current route: sections of the former loop/boardwalk have been washed out, so plan on an out-and-back along the open segments.
• Footing: mostly easy with some uneven rock/talus and brief ups/downs; sturdy shoes help.

Wildlife

Meadows are wildlife magnets. Black bears are sometimes spotted (best at dawn/dusk); deer, marmots, birds of prey, and snakes are also possible. Keep your distance and never approach wildlife. Bear spray isn’t permitted here—know standard bear safety instead.

Logistics and Amenities

There’s a small paved parking lot off Highway 180 near the trailhead; it fills fast on busy days. Vault toilets and shaded picnic tables are by the river, and benches appear along the route. The Kings River is swift and cold—admire it, but don’t swim.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through fall is prime. Go early or late for easier parking, softer light on the cliffs, and better wildlife viewing. Note that the Cedar Grove road typically closes from mid‑November until late April; check status before you go.

Make It a Bigger Day

From the bridge, you can follow the River Trail to link sights along the canyon, including a straightforward extension to Roaring River Falls for more scenery without much extra effort.

Rules to Know

Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail. Pack bug repellent in warm months—mosquitoes and gnats can be fierce near the river.
