Junction View

Junction View is an overlook on Highway 180, on the westbound side as you leave Kings Canyon. From the turnout, you look almost straight down into the meeting of the Middle and South Forks of the Kings River. It’s a useful pause if you want the canyon’s scale without taking a hike.

The confluence sits 2,260 feet above sea level; Spanish Peak rises to 10,051 feet on its north side. The contrast makes the drop from the high Sierra to the river easy to read. For a photo, aim down the canyon and keep both the river junction and the steep walls in frame; the water alone is small from this high viewpoint.

A wayside exhibit, The Kings Canyon: A Wonderland of Unique Geology, pairs photos and text with the canyon in view. The wider Sierra landscape has been shaped by at least four glacial advances over the last 10 million years. Moving ice carved valleys and peaks, while resistant granite helped preserve the sharp relief you see from the turnout.

The pullout is on the westbound lane as you leave the canyon. The overlook is listed as wheelchair accessible, though route-surface details aren’t provided. There are no restrooms, potable water or picnic tables at the site, so plan those at another stop.
