Overview
In the far north, Babalala Waterhole is a classic pull-up-and-wait spot: simple, quiet, and rewarding when conditions line up. It sits on the H1-7 roughly midway between Shingwedzi and Punda Maria, about 14 km from Sirheni Bush Camp. The nearby Babalala Picnic Site makes this a handy break on a long northern drive.

Guide
When the bush is dry, permanent water draws elephants and general plains game, with buffalo and predators (lion, leopard, wild dog) moving through at first/last light. Birding is strong year-round, with waterbirds and raptors working the area when water is present.
Park, switch off, and give it 20–40 minutes—much of the action arrives quietly. Keep the sun behind you if possible; a 200–400 mm lens and a window beanbag make a big difference. Scan the fringes for predators or shy antelope holding back before they commit to drink.
Stay in your vehicle unless you’re at a designated picnic area. Give elephants extra space and back off at any sign of discomfort. Keep engines (and radios) off and avoid blocking others’ sight lines.
In wet spells, consider spending more time along rivers and larger dams, using Babalala as a quick check rather than a long stakeout. On dry, crisp winter days, it’s worth a longer sit.
