Overview
A small, quiet bushveld camp in the far north, Sirheni sits along the Mphongolo River and feels properly wild. All accommodation faces the river, and the camp is closed to day visitors, so you get tranquil evenings with a big Kruger soundscape—lions, hyenas, even the occasional leopard right below camp. The name comes from a Tsonga/Shangaan word referencing an old elephant burial nearby.
Sirheni’s old dam/weir was washed away in the 2013 floods and hasn’t been rebuilt, so visible water is now seasonal—often great in the rains, quieter in the dry. The hides are superbly placed, but vegetation or sand build-up can limit views at times; many guests end up watching the river traffic straight from their verandas.

Guide
This area is a magnet for elephants and buffalo, often right along the fence line. Predators—lion, leopard, spotted hyena—work the river, and a resident leopard is reported often. The northern mopaneveld here also turns up rarities like roan, sable, tsessebe, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, eland, Sharpe’s grysbok, and reedbuck. Birders do well from the two hides and the verandas: thrushes, robin-chats, parrots, orioles, weavers, plus waterbirds when there’s surface water.
It’s about 54 km (roughly two hours of unhurried, game-rich driving) from Punda Maria Gate to Sirheni. Allow time—this northern region often rewards slow rolls along the river loops.
