N’wamanzi Lookout

Expect river regulars: hippos in the pools, Nile crocodiles on sandbanks, and elephants, buffalo, and antelope drifting in to drink—especially reliable in the dry winter months when water is scarce elsewhere. Birding can be excellent, with African fish eagles, Goliath herons, storks, kingfishers, and swifts working the channel and airspace. Predators (lions, leopards) do pass along the riverbanks now and then, most often at first and last light.

This is a signed viewpoint/pull‑off with no toilets, water, or shop. Only alight where permitted and keep children close. Windows up if baboons or vervet monkeys are around. Parking is limited—pull in tight and leave space so others can come and go.

Bring binoculars; a small spotting scope is a bonus for distant crocs and raptors. Switch off the engine and listen—the fish eagle’s call often betrays action. Scan sandbars, exposed rocks, and shaded river edges methodically.

N'wamanzi is roughly 10 km west of Olifants Rest Camp, making that the logical stop for ablutions, a shop run, or a meal. Pair this lookout with time on the Olifants high‑level bridge and check the sightings boards at Letaba or Olifants before you set out to target recent movement along the river.
