About Balule Rest Camp

If you want Kruger at its most old‑school and unvarnished, Balule delivers. This tiny, resident‑only satellite camp sits on the southern bank of the Olifants River and strips things back to basics: no electricity, paraffin lanterns at night, and a quiet, wilderness feel. It’s enclosed by an electric fence and capped at a small number of guests, so nights are about stars, the hiss of lanterns, and the soundscape of hippos and hyenas carrying in from the river.

Best time to visit

Season: Winter (May–Aug) is prime for game viewing along the river as waterholes pull in wildlife. Summer can be fiercely hot (often over 40°C), with afternoon storms offering brief relief.
Crowds: The camp is small and popular; it books out well in advance. Weekends and peak holiday periods across southern Kruger are generally busier, but Balule itself stays tranquil due to resident‑only access.
Light and sightings: Aim for first light and late‑afternoon drives along the river roads for soft light and animal movement.

Accommodation and Facilities

Balule is simple on purpose. There are six budget, three‑bed huts built in the spirit of Kruger’s early days—no electricity, no ceiling fans, and no windows (vents instead)—but linen and towels are provided, and lanterns light the nights. For campers and caravans, there are 15 shaded sites, also without power points.

Expect a single communal ablution block with standard toilets and gas‑heated showers, and a communal kitchen with a scullery, gas stoves, and a shared freezer, plus braai (barbecue) facilities. There’s no shop, restaurant, or fuel on site; you’ll do your check‑in at Satara or Olifants and get your supplies at Olifants Rest Camp, about 11 km north.
