Best time to visit

Season: The dry winter months are best for concentrated activity at water, with thinner bush making sightings easier. In the lush summer, the scenery is beautiful but animals can be harder to pick out.
Time of day: Early and late are your prime windows for movement and soft light. Midday can still produce action at the water, but heat and glare aren’t kind to photography.
Crowds: This is a gravel backroad detour, so it’s typically quieter than the tar. Weekdays are sleepier still.

Getting There

Access the weir via the S89 gravel road, an 8 km connector running east from the H1-4 (between Satara and Olifants) to the S90. It’s an easy add-on to a north–south run: peel off H1-4, check the weir, then continue to S90 and either loop back or carry on toward the Olifants/Balule area.
