Numbi Entrance Gate

If you’re based around White River or coming from the west, Numbi is often the most convenient and can be lighter on vehicle traffic than the busier Phabeni/Kruger Gate approaches. Inside, you’re straight onto Pretoriuskop’s scenic loops (think Shabeni/Fayi), with cooler high‑ground “granite suite” landscapes. Wildlife here can be more about patient, mixed sightings—giraffe, kudu, zebra, and rewarding birding—rather than the high‑density river spectacles further east.

The last stretch to Numbi commonly uses the R538 and passes through a busy village with many speed bumps and, at times, reported safety concerns. Current advice from within the community is to drive in daylight, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid stopping on isolated sections. If conditions feel uncertain on the day, route via the R40/Hazyview and use Phabeni or Kruger Gate instead.

• Dash to Pretoriuskop, then loop Shabeni for dramatic boulders and views.
• Work the Fayi Loop in golden light for general game and birds.
• With time, the Voortrekker Road toward Afsaal mixes history and habitat—just mind gate‑closing times for your return.

This area’s woodland means you work a bit harder for big cats than along the Sabie or Crocodile River corridors. On the flip side, it’s excellent for varied habitats, seasonal wildflowers, and birdlife; rhino have historically been a possibility when protection allows. Sightings can swing from quiet to thrilling—luck and timing matter.

• Complete the Gate Registration & Indemnity form in advance and bring ID/passports for faster processing.
• Expect occasional waits at busy times—30 minutes isn’t unheard of when counters are backed up.
• The last 10 km approach has multiple, not‑well‑marked speed bumps; slow down and keep your eyes up.
• No shopping or fuel at the gate—plan to refuel, stock up, or eat at Pretoriuskop.
