If you’re based around White River or coming from the west, Numbi is often the most convenient and can be lighter on vehicle traffic than the busier Phabeni/Kruger Gate approaches. Inside, you’re straight onto Pretoriuskop’s scenic loops (think Shabeni/Fayi), with cooler high‑ground “granite suite” landscapes. Wildlife here can be more about patient, mixed sightings—giraffe, kudu, zebra, and rewarding birding—rather than the high‑density river spectacles further east.

Safety and routing

The last stretch to Numbi commonly uses the R538 and passes through a busy village with many speed bumps and, at times, reported safety concerns. Current advice from within the community is to drive in daylight, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid stopping on isolated sections. If conditions feel uncertain on the day, route via the R40/Hazyview and use Phabeni or Kruger Gate instead.

Expect the essentials: permit control, parking, and public restrooms. There’s no fuel, big shop, or restaurant at the gate—head to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp for those. Opening/closing times vary by month (roughly sunrise to sunset), so confirm the day’s times before you go. You’ll pay conservation fees on entry; cards are widely accepted, but connectivity can wobble, so bring a backup payment option. Late arrivals are only allowed in emergencies, with escort arrangements to Pretoriuskop available until the evening on a paid basis.
