Pretoriuskop Rest Camp

Expect a mix of classic big game and some special species if you put in the miles. The loop roads and nearby routes regularly deliver white and black rhino, buffalo and elephant. This belt is also one of your better shots at sable antelope; eland and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest occur too. Predators like leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena are seen in the area.

Targets worth planning for: rocky outcrops for klipspringer and rock hyrax; Mestel Dam for hippo; Shitlhave Dam for reedbuck. Productive routes include the corridor toward Skukuza, Transport Dam, Afsaal picnic site, and the Napi Road area. Closer to camp, the tall, sour grasses can hide animals—so range wider for denser sightings.

You can book guided game drives (morning, sunset) and guided bush walks straight from camp. Bush Braais and Bush Breakfasts add a flair—think a game drive to a remote setup and a meal in the wild with a guide hosting the experience. Multi‑day options include the Napi Wilderness Trail; there’s also the weather‑sensitive Madlabantu 4×4 Adventure Trail and the short Sable Trail camp walk.

Options run from simple huts and basic bungalows to family cottages and two larger guest houses, plus a sizeable campsite. Expect very practical stays rather than luxury: some bungalows are basic (a few older units may only have a basin and use shared facilities), while the cottages and guest houses add full kitchens and extra comforts. Utensil boxes can be hired if your unit doesn’t include them.

As the first camp to open to visitors, Pretoriuskop is part of Kruger lore. It’s named after a nearby hill associated with early frontier history. The broader area ties into stories like João Albasini’s trading days and the famous Jock of the Bushveld route along Voortrekker Road—little touches of history as you explore.
