Pafuri Gate is the remote, far‑northern entry point that drops you straight into Kruger’s most biodiverse corner. Expect a simple permit check and basic ablutions at the gate itself—no shop, fuel, or restaurant—then an immediate sense of space and quiet that’s hard to find further south.

This is the gateway to the Pafuri/Makuleke area: riverine forests along the Luvuvhu and Limpopo, fever‑tree stands, and history‑soaked corners like Crook’s Corner. Birders know it as a holy‑grail zone with rare specials and huge species counts, while general wildlife viewing along the rivers can be superb.

• At the gate: permit control and basic ablutions only; services are limited.
• Nearby: Pafuri Picnic Site offers day‑visitor toilets and braai facilities, plus firewood and cold drinks for sale.
• Full services: Punda Maria Rest Camp (about 70 km south inside the park) is your reliable stop for fuel, food, ice, and supplies.

The Pafuri region blends pans, floodplains, and river corridors. Birding is exceptional, with rarities like Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Crowned Eagle, and Racket‑tailed Roller recorded. Mammals range from nyala and kudu to buffalo, elephant, and the big cats, especially around water.

Best time to visit

Arrive right at gate opening for the coolest temperatures, calm roads, and prime wildlife movement along the rivers. Mid‑morning tends to be busier than first light. Gate hours vary by season—plan your day so you’re not rushing back to closing time, especially with slower road conditions up here.

Practicalities & cautions

• Provision before you come: there’s no fuel or shop at/near the gate; use Punda Maria as your staging post.
• Payments: card facilities can be unavailable—carry cash for incidentals en route.
• Roads: expect potholes on the first stretch inside; drive slowly. On the approach roads, livestock may be on or near the verge.
• Remoteness: cell signal can be patchy; carry extra water and essentials, and stick to speed limits. This is a malaria area—use repellent and take standard precautions.
