Overview

Echo Bay Campground sits on the quiet Overton Arm and delivers a true Lake Mead desert camp: year‑round, no‑frills, and blissfully uncrowded. The campground is split into lower and upper areas; both offer paved pads for tents or RVs, picnic tables, and fire rings/grills. It’s dry camping—no site hookups and no showers—so come prepared to be self‑sufficient.

What You’ll Find

Facilities: Flush restrooms with sinks, multiple potable water spigots, and an RV dump plus water refill near the entrance to the upper campground.
Campsites: Paved/asphalt pads with tables and fire pits/grills; some sites have partial lake views and a bit of shade from palms, oleanders, and cottonwoods.
Services nearby: A small store, fuel, propane, and other traveler basics are available in the Echo Bay developed area; a separate Echo Bay RV Village offers full hookups, showers, laundry, and Wi‑Fi for its guests (it’s not the same as the NPS campground).

Activities & Wildlife

This is a launchpad for boating and fishing on Lake Mead, plus easy shoreline wandering and wide‑open stargazing thanks to the remote location. Expect desert wildlife—birds, lizards, antelope squirrels, and occasional coyotes or wild burros. Bighorn sheep have been spotted in the area, too. As always, don’t feed wildlife.

Reservations, Rules & Practicalities

Reservations are required for all NPS sites here and are handled online; there’s no cash accepted on site. Common rules apply: quiet hours 10 p.m.–6 a.m.; pets on a leash (max 6 ft); fires only in provided rings/grills and fully extinguished. Cell coverage is limited overall and tends to be best near the Echo Bay Ranger Station. Note: ornamental oleander grows around some sites and is toxic if ingested.

Nearby Worth the Detour

Short drives unlock Redstone Picnic Area’s red‑rock outcrops, the ruins of the St. Thomas ghost town, Rogers Spring and Blue Point Spring, and the dramatic landscapes of Valley of Fire State Park. Echo Bay has a boat launch and fish‑cleaning station in the developed area, but water levels can affect ramp status—plan accordingly.

Weather & Conditions

Summer is serious desert heat—often over 100°F—so plan for early/late activity and serious sun protection. From October through April, days are cooler and nights can dip toward freezing. Winds can kick up any time; secure tents and awnings.

Best Time to Visit

October–April is the sweet spot for comfortable camping and hiking. Aim for weekdays for extra solitude. For photography and calmer conditions, sunrise and the hour before sunset light up the lake and surrounding hills beautifully. In summer, treat dawn and dusk as your activity windows and lay low midday.
