Overview

About Soda Canyon Overlooks

Why stop

  • Three overlooks widen the view beyond Balcony House.

Heads up

  • Balcony House is distant, so its details are hard to see unaided.
The white mineral deposits visible below the rim are calcium carbonate left by seep springs. Ancestral Pueblo people once used those springs, and the deposits gave the canyon its name.

Soda Canyon Overlooks is a trio of rim viewpoints reached by a short walk through Mesa Verde’s mesa-top woodland. The 1.2-mile round trip leads to views across the canyon toward Balcony House and other cliff dwellings. It’s a good stop if you want to see Balcony House without taking its ranger-guided tour, though the dwellings sit far across the canyon; bring binoculars if you want to pick out details.

The unpaved route is generally level, with about 70 feet of elevation change, and passes pinyon pine and Utah juniper. Some stretches are exposed, so summer heat can make the walk feel tougher than its length suggests. Carry water and avoid the hottest part of the day. The trailhead is on Cliff Palace Loop Road, which is seasonally open from late spring until about December 1 or the first significant snowfall. Check current access before driving; pets and bicycles aren’t allowed on the trail.

Balcony House faces east, so it gets direct sun in the morning and is shaded in the afternoon. A telephoto lens helps across the canyon. The views are broad and scenic, but this is a distant look at the cliff dwellings rather than a close visit.
