Colin Todd Hut

Colin Todd Hut is a serviced 10-bunk alpine hut at about 1,780 m on Shipowner Ridge, between the Bonar and Iso glaciers. It sits below Mount Aspiring's northwest ridge and is used by climbers tackling the mountain. This is a remote mountaineering base, not a roadside stop or a casual walk-up hut.

Getting here involves steep mountain terrain and glacier travel. Approaches described by mountaineers include routes via Bevan Col and Quarterdeck Pass; these are alpine routes, not ordinary walking tracks, and conditions vary. Plan it as part of a mountaineering trip rather than an improvised detour.

The hut is open for public use and has ten bunks. Plan to carry food and supplies for your stay. Hut tickets are required, but the published access directions are inconsistent about whether to book. Confirm the current ticket and booking arrangements before setting out.

The current hut is about 150 m northwest of its original site. Some map pins still appear to mark the former hut, so make sure your navigation target matches the replacement hut.

Colin Macdonald Todd was a 28-year-old Dunedin climber who died in 1955. New Zealand Alpine Club members built the first hut as a memorial in January 1960. The present hut replaced it in 1995–96 about 200 m along Shipowner Ridge, which explains why older map data can point to the former building.
